Infamous Supplementary: Constitution

Constitution is the ability which relates to the character's pain tolerance, endurance, and recovery speed. Characters with a high constitution are most known for their high hit points, however there are several other advantages to having good constitution as well. Like with strength, constitution is an ability most often seen with Fighters, as other classes have the additional number of hit points gained from constitution limited to 2. While other classes can strongly benefit from up to 16 constitution, Fighters become increasingly more and more resilient up to 25.

The following table describes the changes applied to the character's hit points and saving throws vs. poison.

In addition to this, there are two percentages associated with a character's constitution score. These are system shock survival, and resurrection survival. These apply to the chance of surviving spells and effects that involve system shock, or resurrection respectively. Spells that age or change the shape of a creature will typically involve a system shock roll, which could result in death.* In the event that a character fails his or her system shock roll, the character will die immediately from the shock imposed on the body. As for resurrection survival, the character has a chance of not being resurrected when an attempt is made to bring the character back from the dead. If this roll is failed, the character is forever and irrevocably dead, being unable to be brought back by anything short of a Wish spell. When employing such a spell, note that the roll is allowed to be made again, and that the character is not actually brought back instantly. Even wishes have limits. After a character is successfully brought back to life, the individual's constitution will be permanently drained by 1 point. The character may only be brought back to life a number of times equal to his or her original constitution score.

*In Farvion, failing the system shock roll will result in the character falling into a coma for 4-7 days. (1d4+3)

Ability Rolls

As for ability rolls which involve constitution, there are a few possible outcomes. These typically relate to the character's ability to endure pain or exhaustion.

10 points over: The character is capable of walking without passing out.

Successful roll (0 under): Necessary for running for more than 5 minutes without resting.

5 points under: The character can run for 3 turns before another roll is required.

10 points under: The character can maintain functionality while suffering from pain, burning, or acidic exposure.

15 points under: The character can resist a disease without training. The character can also run for two hours before another roll is required.

20 points under: The character is capable of running for an entire day without food, water, or rest before another check is made. Doing this more than one week will require a system shock roll. The character can also resist a poison without training.

Notable Skills

There are a small yet meaningful selection of powerful constitution proficiencies which can aid a character. These include things mostly applied to a character's survivability.

Survival: Arctic, Desert, Tropical, and Forester: All of these proficiencies give the character terrain knowledge of areas which may be difficult to survive in otherwise. These are typically due to either lack of food, or the prominence of dangerous flora and diseases.

Disease Resistance, +Poison Resistance, and ++Immunity: These proficiencies can grant the character a very strong immunity to diseases and poisons. Disease Resistance allows the character a constitution roll in defense against diseases, with Poison Resistance giving the same defense against poisons. Immunity grants the character complete immunity to all diseases, and allows the character to select 3 poisons, which will no longer affect your character. In addition, this proficiency grants +2 to saves vs. poison, and +2 to constitution when factoring in resistance rolls.

Endurance: This allows the character for go an extended period of time without food or water.

Resist Pain: This proficiency allows the character to function while in extreme pain if a constitution roll is made. This can allow a spellcaster to maintain constitution after taking damage.

+Shock Resistance: This proficiency allows the character to continue fighting after going down. This can be done for 1 round for every point starting at 10 under. If the character suffers damage however, another constitution roll will be required. Note that the character will continue bleeding out during this time.

Constitution is an incredibly useful trait to have on just about any character. Even having an ability of 10 or more could be the difference between a successful mission and a meaningless death. Characters with a strong constitution have so many new options revealed to them, regardless of class or race.
